As Americans, we value freedom of choice; it’s what our country was founded upon.
As Nevadans, we have limited choices regarding health insurance, and it’s hitting us square in the wallet. State regulations in Nevada have limited competition in the health insurance market. This has driven up costs for consumers.
We need reforms that increase competition, and you can help. Reforms that allow out-of-state insurance plans and reduce mandates could lead to lower premiums and better coverage. Real choice + real options = real healthcare savings for Nevadans.
Premiums Increase When There’s Limited Competition
Monopoly was a fun game to play as a kid. It’s not so fun in the real world where limited competition allows companies to jack up premiums because they are the only game in town.
Limited competition in Nevada’s health insurance market has increased premiums. The expected rate increase for 2025 is over 7%. This makes coverage unaffordable for many residents. And puts unnecessary economic strain on their families.
Reforms that help increase competition will drive down costs. It will also give consumers more options and allow them to choose the best health plan for themselves and their families.
Crossing State Lines Can Make Health Insurance More Affordable
How can Nevadans increase their health insurance options? One of the best ways would be to allow the sale of health insurance across state lines. Reducing unnecessary coverage mandates that force Nevadans to buy only in-state plans would also create a more competitive marketplace, lowering costs.
Right now, Nevadans are limited to just a handful of options in-state. Being able to purchase insurance across state lines would create more competition. With increased competition comes lower costs, and more plan options. This gives consumers more control over their healthcare choices.
An Increase in Competition Means More Control
More health insurance options promote competition among providers, which leads to lower prices and/or improved quality. If Nevadans can purchase plans across state lines, providers will be forced to adjust pricing to stay competitive. Which is a good thing for consumers – not just in Nevada but in other states.
Increased competition gives consumers more control over their healthcare decisions, because there will be more plans to choose from, whether it’s for an individual or a family. And they won’t be forced to pay for plan coverages they will never need. This allows them to choose the coverage that best fits their needs.
