We barely had time to catch our breath after Friday’s major committee deadline, and yet the clock keeps ticking! The Second House Passage deadline is Thursday, May 23rd, which means we’re headed for a week full of floor votes and lightning-fast hearings—especially for bills that were just introduced. Buckle up, it’s going to be a sprint!
📋 Bills Scheduled for Hearings This Week 📋
Most of the bills are making their last appearances in budget committees for the legislators to evaluate their fiscal impact on the state, a few are also having their policy hearings. Here are the bills that have hearings scheduled—and where we stand:
- ❌ SB460 – The EDUCATE Act that invests in universal Pre-K initiatives, restricts charter schools flexibilities and imposes heavy requirements on Opportunity scholarship recipients.
- ❌ SB422 – This bill revises provisions related to voting, however, it would allow to present an out-of-state ID when registering to vote.
- ✅ AB584 – Governor’s education bill aimed at expanding school choice opportunities for Nevadan families and giving parents some power over the quality of their children’s education.
- ✅ AB376 – This bill would create an regulatory sandbox for property insurance policies, aimed to help policyholders in northern Nevada who have lack of coverage because of common wildfires.
- ✅ AB533 – This bill allows students to attend public schools outside their designated zone if the school is not at capacity for their grade level and they receive approval. It is a restricted form of open enrollment that can provide some school choice to families who need it the most.
- ❌ SB318 – This bill prohibits charter schools from contracting with educational management organizations (EMOs) for operational or management services. It also requires charter schools to notify their sponsor of any construction or repair projects exceeding $100,000.
🦷👂 Thursday: Ways and Means Committee Goes Full Grey’s Anatomy (But for Licensing)
On Thursday the 22nd, the Assembly Committee on Ways and Means will hold a hearing that may as well be sponsored by WebMD. They’ll be reviewing a lineup of interstate compacts for occupational licensing that includes:
