AB 383 has emerged as a significant legislative proposal for its potential to enhance student achievement. This bill focuses on a proven educational strategy: high-impact tutoring. By establishing a framework to deliver evidence-based, high-quality tutoring programs, AB 383 aims to provide equitable access to resources that can benefit students across all grade levels, subjects, and academic backgrounds. For educators, families, and stakeholders invested in Nevada’s educational future, this initiative represents a promising opportunity to drive meaningful progress.

Why Tutoring Matters

Think of tutoring like a superpower for learning. Studies show that “high-impact” tutoring—where kids get regular, focused help 3 times a week for at least 30 minutes—can lift almost every student. It’s not a one-size-fits-all fix; it’s personal, targeted, and effective. Whether a kid’s struggling with math after the pandemic or needs a push in reading, tutoring can make a difference. AB 383 would set up a system to bring that superpower to Nevada.

Proof It Works: Other States Are Already Winning

Nevada wouldn’t be the first to try this—other states have already paved the way, and the results are impressive.

  • Connecticut: They’ve got a list of “vetted tutoring programs” anyone can check out. They zoomed in on math, which took a big hit during the pandemic. At East Hartford Middle School, 149 students in a new tutoring program saw their math scores jump almost four times more than kids with regular help. That’s huge!
  • Ohio: They’ve built a directory of approved tutoring programs for subjects like math, English, science, and social studies. These programs use great materials, focus on data to track progress, and hire qualified tutors. Plus, they offer training to make tutors even better.
  • North Carolina: Their “NC Education Corps” puts trained tutors in schools for one-on-one or small group sessions. Early reports? Kids are making real gains in reading and math. One principal said all the tutored students improved in reading, and 10% went from below grade level to on track in just half a year.

These states didn’t just slap together random programs—they built smart systems that spotlight what works. AB 383 could do the same for Nevada.

Why Nevada Needs This

The pandemic hit our kids hard—learning loss is still a problem. For school districts that were performing below national average, like Clarck County School District, this problem is even more pronounced. But AB 383 isn’t just about catching up; it’s about building a stronger future. By setting up a system for high-quality tutoring, Nevada could give students the tools to thrive year after year. It’s like planting seeds now that’ll grow into big wins later—better grades, more confidence, and a brighter outlook for our state.

The Bottom Line

Nevada Policy calls AB 383 a “critical step forward,” and it’s easy to see why. It’s a chance to bring proven, evidence-based tutoring to our schools. Other states have shown it works—Connecticut, Ohio, and North Carolina are already reaping the rewards. By passing AB 383, Nevada could join them, making a smart investment in our students and our future. Who wouldn’t want that?
