Week 12 Under the Dome: Another Deadline Looming

| April 21, 2025

Welcome to Week 12 at the Legislature! We’re entering a pivotal stretch—April 22 is the deadline for bills to pass out of their house of origin. If they don’t make it to the floor and get a vote, they’re officially out of the game. While some legislation continues to move, we’re still waiting on major bills related to education funding, election integrity, and the infamous film tax credits, which haven’t yet seen floor action. 👀

After the 22nd, the surviving bills will cross over to the other chamber, where they’ll start the whole committee process again. Others, have been referred back to their respective committees to revisit discussions of fiscal notes, amendments and more. Here’s what’s already queued up for hearings this week:

🔜 On the Agenda for Week 12

🔴 AB188 – Expands eligibility for retiree health insurance subsidies to certain public employees hired after 2012, undoing prior cost-saving reforms and placing a heavier burden on taxpayers.
📍 Scheduled for: Assembly Government Affairs on Aril 23rd at 8:00am.

🟢 SB418 – Cleans up the process for collecting overdue PERS contributions by specifying who’s responsible and from where payments should be sourced, improving accountability in public finance.
📍 Scheduled for: Assembly Government Affairs on Aril 23rd at 8:00am

🔴 SB458 – Requests $773,000 in extra funds for the Secretary of State’s office to cover a “shortfall” in travel and operations—because apparently democracy now comes with first-class legroom.
📍 Scheduled for: Assembly Ways and Means on April 23rd

That’s all for now. Stay tuned—we’ll be watching closely as bills race to beat the deadline on Tuesday. It’s about to get crowded under the dome in Carson City.
