Things are picking up speed in Carson City, and major legislation is advancing quickly! But don’t worry—our Bill Tracker is still the best way to stay on top of the most recent bills, hearings, and work sessions. As we dive into another busy week, here’s what’s coming up:
Bills Up for Hearings This Week
AB 376 – This bill creates a Regulatory Experimentation Program to allow insurance companies to test new products without following standard regulatory requirements. This sandbox will give businesses to experiment with new products and come up with the best market solutions.
- Upcoming hearing on March 31st at 1:30pm.
- Email the committee
AB 533 – This bill expands school choice by allowing students to attend public schools outside their assigned zones, as long as space is available. It also ensures that districts aren’t forced to provide transportation and permits schools to accept grants or donations to support open enrollment—a small win for parental choice and flexibility.
- Upcoming hearing on April 1st at 11:30am.
AB 335 – This bill mandates new bureaucratic positions in large school districts and imposes additional training and reporting requirements on teachers without direct improvements to student outcomes. It also extends high school enrollment for English learners up to age 21, removes accountability measures, and shifts funding toward uncertain programs—an inefficient use of public education resources.
- Upcoming hearing on April 1st at 11:30pm.
- Email the committee
Bills Up for a Work Session
AB 191 – This bill expands collective bargaining rights for certain state employees, i.e. NSHE employees, increasing the power of public employee unions—a dynamic that has been infamously causing issues in Clark County School District.
AB 244 – This bill bans polystyrene foam containers at large food establishments, phasing in restrictions over time and imposing fines of up to $1,000 per violation—a regulatory burden that entrepreneurs will eventually have to comply with, increasing costs both for businesses and for consumers.
AB 49 – This bill eases teacher licensing requirements by allowing educators, nurses, and social workers to start working while awaiting final licensure approval. It also allows out-of-state teachers to work in Nevada classrooms and reduces the fees for substitute teacher licenses, helping address the teacher shortage without unnecessary red tape.
Stop Changing the Clocks? AB 81 Is Back!
If you’re tired of springing forward and falling back, you’re not alone—AB 81, the Lock the Clock Act, is scheduled for a work session this week! This bill would end the twice-a-year time change and keep Nevada on a consistent time schedule. Whether you’re a fan of permanent daylight or just want your microwave to show the right time all year round, this one might be worth watching.
With bills advancing quickly, now is the time to stay engaged and make your voice heard! Keep an eye on our Bill Tracker for updates, and as always, we’ll keep you informed on the biggest developments.
