As we enter Week 7 of the legislative session, key bills are moving through committee hearings and work sessions. This week, we’ll be testifying on measures that impact education, economic growth, and more. Below, you’ll find a breakdown of upcoming hearings and bills being debated in committee work sessions.
🎤 Bills Up for Hearings This Week
Committee hearings provide an opportunity for lawmakers to hear testimony from the public, experts, and stakeholders before deciding on a bill’s next steps. Here are the bills scheduled for hearings this week that we support:
✅ AB 276 – This bill adjusts the commerce tax threshold by replacing the fixed $4 million Nevada gross revenue limit with an inflation-adjusted threshold, ensuring it increases annually based on the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Starting in 2025, the threshold will rise with inflation, reducing the tax burden on businesses by preventing automatic tax hikes due to rising costs.
- Upcoming hearing on March 18th at 4:00pm.
✅ SB 175 – This bill allows current and former military members certified as JROTC instructors to obtain a Nevada teaching license through an alternative route, bypassing traditional coursework requirements. By recognizing military training and experience, this measure helps address Nevada’s teacher shortage while streamlining licensure for veterans and active-duty personnel.
- Upcoming hearing on March 17th at 1:00pm.
✅ AB 371 – This bill joins Nevada in the Cosmetology Licensure Compact, allowing licensed cosmetologists to obtain a multistate license to practice in other member states. It streamlines the licensing process, reduces barriers for professionals moving between states, and creates a commission to oversee compliance and information sharing.
- Upcoming hearing on March 17th at 1:30pm.
🏛️ Committee Work Sessions of the Week
Unlike a public hearing, where testimony is heard, a work session is when lawmakers debate and make recommendations for the Floor on bills, often amending them before a final committee vote. Here are the bills scheduled for work sessions this week:
✅ AB 86 – This bill eliminates the requirement for a Nevada logging license to perform cutting operations. It allows landowners to manage their own property without unnecessary regulatory barriers.
- Upcoming work session on March 19th at 4:00pm.
✅ AB 163 – This bill joins Nevada in the Counseling Compact, allowing licensed professional counselors to practice across member states, including through telehealth services. With a severe mental health professional shortage, especially in rural areas, this bill helps expand access to care and mobility for counselors.
- Upcoming work session on March 17th at 1:30pm.
✅ AB 236 – This bill reforms the appointment process for teachers and educational personnel on state education committees. It requires the Governor to select appointees from lists submitted by organizations representing the plurality of educators in large and non-large districts, rather than from the Nevada State Education Association. This ensures a more representative and diverse selection process for key education policy roles.
- Upcoming work session on March 18th.
🚗 Funny Bill of the Week: The Crosswalk Crackdown 🚗
Think twice before parking near a crosswalk—SB 320 is making sure you don’t block pedestrian paths! This bill extends the prohibition on stopping, standing, or parking within 20 feet of a crosswalk, whether marked or unmarked. But don’t worry, if there’s a curb extension, you’ll get a 5-foot break—parking is only restricted within 15 feet. Local authorities can tweak these rules for safety reasons, and enforcement won’t kick in until 2027, so you’ve got a little time to adjust your parallel parking habits.
- Upcoming hearing on March 19th at 3:30pm.
